STRIPPING
The Importance of Stripping in Wooden Joinery
Stripping is a crucial process in the restoration and maintenance of wooden joinery. It involves removing old layers of paint, varnish, and other finishes to reveal the original wood beneath. This process is essential for several reasons:
-
Preservation: Stripping helps preserve the integrity of the wood by removing layers that may have deteriorated over time, allowing for proper inspection and repair of any underlying issues such as rot or damage.
-
Aesthetic Appeal: Removing old finishes restores the natural beauty of the wood, enhancing its appearance and allowing for a fresh, clean surface that can be refinished to look like new.
-
Preparation for Repair: Stripping prepares the wood for any necessary repairs, ensuring that new finishes or treatments adhere properly and last longer.
-
Historical Accuracy: In restoration projects, stripping is essential for maintaining the historical accuracy of wooden joinery, ensuring that the finished product remains true to the original design and craftsmanship.
At our company, we specialize in various stripping methods to cater to different needs and conditions:
-
Chemical Stripping: Using specialized chemicals, we can efficiently remove multiple layers of paint and varnish without damaging the underlying wood. This method is particularly effective for intricate or detailed joinery work.
-
Manual Stripping: Our skilled craftsmen carefully strip wood by hand, using tools to meticulously remove old finishes. This method allows for precise control and is ideal for delicate or detailed areas.
-
Heat Stripping: By applying controlled heat, we can soften old paint and varnish, making it easier to scrape off without harming the wood. This method is quick and effective, particularly for larger surfaces.
Our comprehensive stripping services ensure that your wooden joinery is expertly prepared for restoration or refinishing, giving your windows, doors, and other elements a new lease on life while maintaining their original character and beauty.
Note that the door or window must be made of solid wood in order to be dip stripped. If your item is not suitable for dip stripping, we can still offer you a hand-stripping service.
The final step is up to you. Most people go for sanding, as it helps revert the grainy texture of the wood and also facilitates smooth finishes.
You can leave the door/window in its raw stripped state (if you’re aiming for a rustic look), you can repaint it or you can use a wax oil/varnish to bring out the original wood grain.
