A Statesman Door is an iconic feature of turn-of-the-century villas. Such residences are well represented in Wellington. They are sturdily built, mostly made from native timbers (Rimu, Kauri, etc) and they are attractive in their elegance. Statesman doors contribute security and good taste to any home space they are included in. A great feature of a Statesman Door is their ability to be modified and in this case modernised. Despite their years they can still be adjusted to meet the times.

Statesmen Door Double Glazing

The current project was a good example of bringing the new to the old. This Statesman Door Double Glazing project began with the restoration of the door itself. This door was selected from our own stock and only required a little work. Firstly, the door was trimmed to the desired measurements. Secondly, the door was clamped to reset the door square and repair any separations in the joins. This process was essential to restrengthen the door and restore it to its pastime sturdiness.

The door knob hole was plugged with a match of wood, adhesive and wood fill. After this, a new lock–a deadlock provided by the customer–was installed as well as door knob and mortise lock. The door knob and mortise lock were both reclaimed items and were selected from the stock in our display cabinets. A custom Double Glazed pane was ordered in and retrofitted into the the empty pane and the glazing beads were tapped securely into place. The restored outcome was then primed and fitted with new stainless steel hinges. Finally, the door was hung on site for our customer, therefore avoiding the complication and hassle of having to do it themselves. On site door hanging is an extension of the services we offer and is better described here.

There is little that we cannot modify. We can extend height, width and we can trim the exact same. We offer a variety of services intent on meeting any specific requirements or visions. A door, as selected from our stock, may seem unsatisfactory when considering its dimensions or how it is hung. It is also possible that a single detail may prove unsatisfactory–perhaps a panel present instead of light letting glass. This can all be accommodated for; hinges can be swapped, any rebated sites can be packed and unwanted panels can be removed and replaced with glass, for which we offer a catalogue of different templates.

We are also in the market of purchasing doors and other recyclables we consider appropriate for restoration. We invite anyone in the possession of such sought after materials and furnishings to contact us. We source from auctions; salvage from demolitions; purchase from home renovation sites, spring-cleaners and remodellers.
