: The loot of a days hard graft.

Matai flooring is exceptionally popular. It features heavily in beginning-of-the-century villas (which Wellington boasts a large number of) and is iconic of galleries and public venues, contributing an unrivalled warmth and waxy sheen. Matai is traditionally milled in the functional format of Tongue and Groove (T & G). It is available in a number of different profiles (we stock 85 mm to 150/155 mm). Matai is also characterised by the variety of colours and shades it offers. There is heartwood Matai which is commonly a rich reddish brown, extremely earthy and rich. There is also sapwood Matai which can be mustardy, or a pale yellow and more closely resembles Rimu. It is sapwood Matai that can also appear in white. In addition to the two most common varieties of Matai there is also ‘flame’ or ‘colour’ Matai which showcases a competition between the two principle styles and often results in a dramatic colourisation(s).

Matai Flooring Home Retrieval

The current project required a huge effort, a large amount of labour. Before salvaging the floorboards the house (residential) was cleared of debris. Next, a perimeter was cut in each of the emptied rooms from within which the floorboards would be recovered from. The salvage was then ready to begin. An assortment of tools and changing methods were used to pry the floorboards loose of their bedding nails. The freed floorboards were stockpiled outside and measured and marked accordingly (taking into consideration both the profile size (width) and the length of the board). Any splits in the groove of the floorboards were noted and trimmings were made to make the boards neat and in good knick for future purchase. Although most of the floorboards were of the same profile (137 mm) the recovered stock was still thoroughly sorted after a long process of de-nailing.

There is little that we cannot modify. We can extend both height and width. We can trim the exact same. We offer a variety of services intent on meeting any specific requirements or visions. A door, as selected from our stock, may seem unsatisfactory when considering its dimensions or how it is hung. It is also possible that a single detail may prove unsatisfactory–perhaps a panel present instead of light letting glass. This can all be accommodated for. Hinges can be swapped. Any rebated sites can be packed. Unwanted panels can be removed and replaced with glass, for which we offer a catalogue of different templates.

We are also in the market of purchasing doors and other recyclables we consider appropriate for restoration. We invite anyone in the possession of such sought after materials and furnishings to contact us. We source from auctions; salvage from demolitions; purchase from home renovation sites and spring-cleaners and remodellers.
