Colonial French Door Restoration

Colonial French Door Resotration, Wellington, No. 8 Building Recyclers

Clamped. Squared. Cured. Recovered.

French Doors are particularly popular. They are sturdily built but maintain an appearance of being delicate and so beautiful. They serve as a fabulous compliment to any home space. But, in compliment of the Doors themselves are sidelights. Sidelights box French Doors into being the main centrepiece. They are usually fixed and can either be one light or multi-paned. The current project, however, was special. In the current project the sidelights were double hung Colonial style windows, unfixed and able to be opened. A set both beautiful and functional.

Colonial French Door Restoration

The current project was as large as expected. The pair of Colonial French Doors were hung in a large frame which also supported opening sidelights, also is the traditional Colonial style. There was a moderate amount of rot damage present. This rot was traced and removed from source to outspread. A matching wood was modelled to the rot site and was stuck using a powerful resin glue. The glue was pressure stuck using clamps. The clamps were then removed and a belt sander was applied to smooth the sites cured of rot. These sites were then refined using a lighter sander. The entire set was then primed before being delivered.

The final product: repaired of rot, squared, primed.

The original set was in much needed repair and all appearances would suggest beyond repair. There was considerable rot damage to the sashes, close to the structural integrity of the joins. But, as is observable in the photographs above, the outcome of this restoration project was impressive–a new life was leant to this colonial style giant.
